VACCINATIONS

* Getting your dog vaccinated may be more controversial than you think. Some people, including many vets, believe pets are over-vaccinated and think that too many vaccinations pose health risks. Others believe vaccinations should be performed yearly to keep dangerous diseases like distemper from getting a hold on the pet population like they did in decades past. It is my opinion that vaccinations cause more problems than they are supposed to cure.

Side Effects of Puppy Shots

Just like babies, puppies can experience a number of adverse reactions to vaccination.

Here are some of the symptoms and what you should do if your puppy displays any of them…

  • Depression - May occurs in the first 24 hours after vaccination. If it lasts longer than 24 hours, call your veterinarian

  • Vomiting Diarrhea- Just like depression, may occur in the first 24 hours after vaccination. Contact your veterinarian if it lasts beyond 24 hours

  • Swelling - This is probably an allergic reaction. Call your veterinarian immediately

Dogs may be getting too many vaccines, vet specialist says - read more here

The unfortunate thing about vaccinosis is that people don't get involved in learning about it until after there is a problem, and by then it's often too late. Vaccinosis is the term used for "reactions our pets have to being vaccinated." It is far more common than we are lead to believe. In fact, most veterinarians refuse to talk about it because they are the ones who give the shots that cause Vaccinosis. Over the past several years I have started to seriously question what the Veterinary industry recommends for a regimen of vaccinations for our dogs. I will tell you that I no longer vaccinate my dogs. I strongly recommend that you research this issue and not blindly accept the advice of your local vet, no matter how nice of a person he or she is.

It is my opinion that vaccinations cause more problems than they are supposed to cure. My research indicates that side effects from vaccinations are thyroid problems, epilepsy, cancer, allergies and behavioral problems just to mention a few. I would recommend that you do your own research. Go to Google and search on "Vaccinosis." Ask yourself if you honestly think the veterinary medical industry is that far behind the human medical field. Humans do not need yearly vaccinations and I do not think our dogs need yearly vaccinations.

Dr Jean Dodds: "This schedule is the one I recommend and should NOT be interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory. It's a matter of professional judgment and choice." For breeds or families of dogs susceptible to or effected with immune dysfunction, immune-mediated disease, immune-reactions associated with vaccinations, or autoimmune endocrine disease (e.g., thyroiditis, Addison's or Cushing's disease, diabetes, etc.).

the following protocol is recommended by Dr. Jean Dodds:

Age of Pups / Vaccine Type - MLV=modified-live virus

  • 9 weeks MLV Distemper/Parvovirus only (e.g. Intervet Progard Puppy)

  • 12 weeks MLV Distemper/Parvovirus only (e.g. Intervet Progard Puppy)

  • 24 weeks or older , if allowable by law Killed Rabies Vaccine

After 1 year, annually measure serum antibody titers against specific canine infectious agents such as distemper and parvovirus. This is especially recommended for animals previously experiencing adverse vaccine reactions or breeds at higher risk for such reactions (e.g., Weimaraner, Akita, American Eskimo, Great Dane). Another alternative to booster vaccinations is homeopathic nosodes. This option is considered an unconventional treatment that has not been scientifically proven to be efficacious. One controlled parvovirus nosode study did not adequately protect puppies under challenged conditions. However, data from Europe and clinical experience in North America support its use. If veterinarians choose to use homeopathic nosodes, their clients should be provided with an appropriate disclaimer and written informed consent should be obtained.

I use only killed 3 year rabies vaccine for adults. In some states, they may be able to give titer test result in lieu of booster.

I do NOT use Bordetella, corona virus, leptospirosis or Lyme vaccines unless these diseases are endemic in the local area pr specific kennel. Furthermore, the currently licensed leptospira bacterins do not contain the serovars causing the majority of clinical leptospirosis today.

  • Do NOT recommend vaccinating bitches during estrus, pregnancy or lactation. Do not vaccinate during times of stress such as: surgery, travel, illness or infection.
